Youssef Zaoui, born in Casablanca in 1990, is a Moroccan cultural worker and multidisciplinary artist who has lived and worked in Casablanca since 2016. He holds a Master’s degree in Cultural and Artistic Engineering from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities – Ben M’sik (2019) and received training at the Higher School of Fine Arts in Casablanca (2015–2017). He has worked with several cultural institutions as a project manager and coordinator, as well as a cultural mediator, focusing on employing artistic and cultural practices as mechanisms for social change. His work involves creating spaces for reflection, creativity, free expression, and dialogue. He has incorporated techniques from the Theatre of the Oppressed in several projects, such as “Theatre of Proposal” and the “African Forum for Social Theatre,” alongside other artistic devices like folktales. His artistic practice utilises multiple media to explore the mechanisms by which collective consciousness is formed in post-independence Moroccan society, beginning with an examination of how this consciousness is shaped within cultural and social structures. This involves exploring the potential of art as a space for critical intervention and reshaping this awareness, thereby enabling the deconstruction of dominant grand narratives.
