Ismay Milford

Ismay Milford is a historian of Eastern Africa’s global connections during the twentieth century, and is currently a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellow at Freie Universität Berlin.

Her first book, African Activists in a Decolonising World: The Making of an Anticolonial Culture, 1952–1966 (CUP, 2023) explores the transnational anticolonial activism of a cohort of mobile activists from Uganda, Malawi, Zambia and mainland Tanzania, emphasising the frustrating everyday labour that went into making anticolonialism into a global cause.

Her current work relates to information politics in cold war East Africa, from the training of librarians and radio engineers to the environmental data produced by satellites. Her broader interests include histories of religion, regionalism, publishing and education.
