Chris Abdul Hakim Martinez

Chris Abdul Hakim Martinez is a PhD candidate in the Department of History at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). His research lies at the intersection of the histories of decolonization and development in twentieth-century West Africa with a particular focus on the Republic of Guinea. His dissertation project investigates struggles for economic sovereignty along the upper Guinea coast through a historical and ethnographic examination of the bauxite mining industry in the Republic of Guinea, and its local and global resonances. His scholarship is grounded in extensive archival research, with particular attention to the material conditions of archival production, preservation, and loss in postcolonial contexts. He is also deeply interested in how revolutionary movements documented themselves, circulated political knowledge, and sustained internationalist networks under conditions of repression, exile, and geopolitical marginalization. Since 2021, he has served as a member of the Kwame Ture Foundation, alongside Bokar Ture, its namesake’s son, leading all projects related to archival preservation and digitization. In this role, he has been directly involved in the stewardship, preservation, and classification of the Kwame Ture Papers.
