Freedom

Freedom, a radical Harlem-based publication founded in 1951 by Paul Robeson and Louis E. Burnham. During the height of the Cold War, the Red Scare, and McCarthyism—when Black left publications were aggressively surveilled and forcibly marginalized—Freedom emerged as a crucial  political and cultural platform for thinkers, artists, and organizers committed to internationalist struggle and anti-capitalist critique. Within this milieu the journalist, Lorraine Hansberry honed the revolutionary commitments that would later shape her globally celebrated creative work. As a radiant radical, Marxist intellectual, and incisive cultural critic, Hansberry used her position at Freedom to advance arguments against state violence, racial and patriarchal domination, and the anti-revolutionary institutional structures that legislated Black oppression both domestically and abroad.
