Sawt al-Marʾa / Women’s Voice / صوت المرأة 2

Sawt al-Marʾa was the magazine of the Sudanese Women’s Union, launched in July 1955 under the editorship of Fatima Ahmed Ibrahim. More than a magazine, it functioned as a feminist political classroom: a space through which women could appear not as objects of reform, but as subjects of analysis, organisation, and political change. Its pages addressed equal pay, literacy, education, healthcare, political participation, labour, custom, religion, and law, while speaking to housewives, students, teachers, nurses, and wage-earning women as political interlocutors. The magazine’s importance lay not only in what it published, but in how it circulated. Linked to the organising world of the Sudanese Women’s Union, it moved through branch networks, literacy work, campaigns, domestic gatherings, and informal movement circuits. In this sense, Sawt al-Marʾa became a portable lesson, a meeting text, and a device for turning dispersed grievances into shared feminist and anti-colonial political language.
